Some Last Minute Knits…And A Pattern

I’ve been busy, trying to finish up a few last things for Christmas. Today, I finished three hats (yay, me!)…gotta LOVE bulky yarn and how quickly it knits up!

Two ‘shroom’ hats; (pattern by Lee Wood Juvan and available free at knitty.com)

and another in ‘flint’ grey/black which I’d be happy to show you except for the fact that my camera takes THE most crappy pictures after dark! Alright, so pictures asap, lol.

Isn’t the texture in that pattern fantastic? I think it’s a great pattern and definitely worth knitting. With the bulky yarn, it can even handle our winters!

The yarn I used is bernat ‘roving’, an acrylic (80)/ wool (20) mix which is really nice to work with and, I feel, much safer left in the hands of forgetful machine washers than a wool alternative. It’s no fun when you shrink your Christmas hat!

I made a little ‘textured scrap hat’ with the leftovers. It’s nothing fancy but I’m planning to write up the pattern. I think it’s kind of cute and definitely an easy, fast knit which takes next to nothing in the bulky yarn. I had two balls of the roving yarn and after making the two ‘shroom’ hats and the scrap hat, I still have some of each colour left!

I’ve completed the pattern and you can find it here;  supersimpletexturedscraphat

Lets hope this works.  If you have any trouble with it, please let me know.

Oh, something I realized I should mention…the gauge for this hat is about 3 sts/4 rows per inch in stockinette.  The finished hat measures 8 inches tall but could be made larger by adding rows to any section you wish or adding another section entirelyl.  I could totally see this hat in a few different colours mixed together, to use up little scraps.

I’ll show you a couple of the night pictures of it and promise to take better ones soon…

It’s Perfect!

I’ve finished my version of ‘Starsky’ (by Jordana Paige) and I have to say it’s turned out amazing!

A couple pics…front and back…

I made a few modifications…beginning with the yarn. The pattern calls for a bulky yarn (knitpicks sierra) but I used Bernat ‘denim style’ (cotton/acrylic blend) and I really think it’s a great choice. It’s light and warm/cozy at the same time, completely machine washable too! The denim style SAYS it’s worsted but it knitted like a bulky for me.

I knit the body and sleeves in the round rather than including seaming in the design. I joined the shoulders with a three needle bind off to eliminate seaming there too. The ONLY seams are those used to set in the sleeves.

I made the sleeve cuffs a little longer than the pattern calls for. I also incorporated one panel of the pattern, centred, up each sleeve. I like the texture and it made the knitting more interesting too 🙂

Mine is the small size and the pattern is available free, from Knitty. I have yet to decide on a fastener or knitting an i-cord tie…

It fits perfectly and the yarn is really too comfy to describe. I can see me making more things with this lovely yarn 🙂

A Little Of This, A Little Of That…

I’ve been working on a bunch of things lately — I’m hoping to have some nice gifts ready to give at Christmastime!

Here is a new picture of the quilt (for my daughter) – I’ve almost completely finished the applique, so far.

Here is a picture of the blanket I’m making for my husband….I’m using some new yarn (to tie it together, I hope) and some from the stash…

Christmas Cozy Blanket

Here is one of the sweater (well, the sleeve) I’m working on – probably for me 🙂 I’m using denim style yarn and I love it so much – so soft and cozy too!

Finished Up!

Yay for finishing things!!! LOL, this took a lot of knitting or at least it felt like it 🙂

Presenting…

The playing with colour kitchen rug!

I wish I had more stamina — it would be awesome even longer than it is BUT that was that for me 🙂 I used a bunch of cotton which I had stashed away, some partial balls so I’m not sure how much yarn is in it! I did use three balls of the light green and two of the darker green for a guideline as to how much goes how far. The ‘woven’ bands could be bits of any oddballs — the more variety the better, though I stuck with the variegated ones and stayed away from the solids (except of course, the white). I really love the woven look of it 🙂

Now back to my regularly scheduled spinning 😉

Cotton Stashbuster…

aka another distraction! 🙂

I’ve started another great stashbuster! It’s to use up a lot of cotton yarn I have and was inspired by the ballband dishcloth which I made the other day…

It’s about 28 to 30 inches wide and I’m thinking it should be about 40 to 48 inches long…I’m thinking it will make a great kitchen/front door (NOT for shoes)/bath mat. OR, lol, it would make an excellent towel though my daughter says that’s not a good idea. She says people won’t see it enough if it’s a towel…she says it’s too nice to be a towel. Love that girl 🙂

I’m switching between a few different mixed colour yarns, trying to go for a woven fabric look. It’s taking a lot of knitting, lol, but it’s very satisfying watching it grow 🙂

The son’s sweater is still on hold…but still on the go! He mentions it every couple of days, lol, I think he may be getting a little worried. The ‘childs socks’ are also just on hold and I hope to finish them up soon.

I haven’t spun for DAYS…a little shocking to me as well…

In fact, I didn’t even knit a stitch yesterday…instead I read a book, a totally strange day but I just wasn’t in the fibre-y mood at all. We got a fantastic cot for our porch (free, at the side of the road, on that day when people around here trade useful objects) and I laid on that and just relaxed. It was awesome, actually.

Ah, and the kids and I transplanted our little veggie garden – a patio garden because I’m not interested in amending the gardens around this house since we’re only renting and they are in horrible shape, more forest than garden. We have peppers, tomatoes, peas and more peas. We love peas and fresh peas are near impossible to buy. I think as long as we fertilize often we should be fine…

The sun is finally shining here so today says ‘laundry’ to me…because we always use the line to dry it’s a dance with the weather on a constant basis….and the weather gets to lead, lol.

Enjoy your day!

Finished ‘Think Spring’ Rug…

on time for my daughter’s birthday even!

I gave it to her last night…she says it really brightens up her room and I agree!

Pattern:  Flower Power rug by Bernat/Lily

Available:  Free on the www.bernat.com site with membership

Materials:  Odds and ends of handicrafter cotton gifted to me.  I didn’t worry about colour really, just wanted a mix of everything.  Brings me back to my years of quilting 🙂

Size:  The pattern calls for 12 blocks.  Mine is 72 blocks about 6.5 inches each.  About 52×60 (roughly)  A nice size for her room 🙂

Now to figure out what to do!  LOL.  I could finish the modern lace henley OR the frost flowers and leaves shawl OR the oak leaves pullover for my mom.  Oh yeah….OR I could return to my new love and spin!

I think I want a spinning wheel so I’m researching like crazy at the moment.  Learning the language, so to speak.  Ratios and flyers and bearings and whatnot…a lot of new things to understand before I feel I know what I’m buying.  My heart is so far set on the Kromski Mazurka…a BEAUTIFUL thing it is.  My dh has his eye on another of the Kromski’s for me (he likes to buy me nice toys…) but I really think the Mazurka does everything almost the same for like 200 dollars less.

LOL…I wonder how much wool one must spin before one reclaims the cost of the tools!  Ok, lets not…this counts as entertainment right?!

What’s Up…

Good morning 🙂

Yeah, I’ve been post-slacking these last couple of days.  I was seduced by a crochet project, lol.

This….

100_0893

It’s the “Flower Power Rug” by Bernat using Handicrafter Cottons in various colours.  The pattern is available for free at www.bernat.com if you join!

I have no set amount of blocks in mind.  It’ll be a judgement call.  I do want it to be large enough to fill the centre of my daughter’s floor.  She is going to be 14 later this month and I think she’ll love it!

So — I’ll be the lady crocheting like mad between now and then!!

I love crochet but there are so few things I want to make using it, lol.  It also gets to my wrist after a while.  I crochet a while, sew the blocks a while…it helps me not hurt myself.

I am so getting ahead of myself — too many things on the go.   It’ll be a whole lot of finishing up after this, REALLY 😉

In Puppy News…No puppies yet.

I think it will be any time within the next 7 days…think being the operative word.  Of course I could be wrong.  She’s still resting a lot and not showing any signs of labour yet.  Her milk is starting to come in but she’s not to the point of leaking or anything.  I’m watching her closely!
