Child’s Lace Sock Pattern

100_1396

These socks are 6.5 inches toe to heel. The size can be easily adjusted with more or fewer repeats of the lace pattern.  The yarn used is handspun heavy fingering/sport weight.

rt means; to knit two together without dropping stitches and then knit into first stitch again, drop stitches.

You Need;

  • 2.75 mm double pointed needles
  • Similar yarn (heavy fingering/sport weight)
  • tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)

Using magic or eastern cast on method, cast on 10 sts.

  • Knit one round.

Increase four stitches per round to 22 sts as follows…

  • Rd 1; [(k1, m1, k3, m1, k1)repeat]
  • Rd 2; [(k1, m1, k5, m1, k1)repeat]
  • Rd 3; [(k1, m1, k7, m1, k1)repeat]

Increase four stitches per round to 38 sts as follows…

  • Rd 1; knit
  • Rd 2; [(k1, m1, k9, m1, k1)repeat] 26 sts
  • Rd 3; knit
  • Rd 4; [(k1, m1, k11, m1, k1)repeat] 30 sts
  • Rd 5; knit
  • Rd 6; [(k1, m1, k13, m1, k1)repeat] 34 sts
  • Rd 7; knit
  • Rd 8; [(k1, m1, k15, m1, k1)repeat] 38 sts

  • knit one round

Toe is complete

Begin lace patterning on 19 sts of instep and maintain stockinette stitch on sole (knit all stitches of sole).  I like to keep all the instep stitches on one needle and split the sole stitches between the other two.  I also change the place the two sole needles meet every couple of rows to avoid laddering.

Repeat the four rows of the pattern 11 times or until foot is about 1 inch less than the desired finished length, being sure to end with a knit row.

Lace Pattern (Instep);

  1. k2, yo, (slip one, knit next two sts together and pass slipped stitch over, decreasing two stitches), yo, k3, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k3, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k2
  2. rt, k15, rt
  3. k5, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k3, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k5
  4. as row 2

Work short row heel on 19 stitches, decreasing to 5 sts between wraps and then increasing until all stitches have been recovered.  As follows…

First half…

  • row 1: (rs) knit across to the last heel stitch (do not work the last stitch), wrap and turn
  • row 2: (ws) purl the last stitch, leaving it unworked – wrap and turn
  • row 3: (rs) knit across to the paired stitch made by the yo of the previous row (the wrap) (the yo will stick out to the side of the unworked stitch), leaving three stitches on the left needle (do NOT knit the pair).  Wrap and turn as usual
  • row 4: (ws) purl to the paired stitches made by the wrap of the previous row – 3 sts unworked.  wrap and turn

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are 5 stitches between wraps

Second half…

  • row 1: (rs) knit to the first stitch of the first pair — k1, correct the mount of the wrap, k2 tog (the wrap with the first st of the next pair) leaving a wrap as the first stitch on the left needle.  wrap and turn
  • row 2: (ws) purl to the first stitch of the first pair — purl the first stitch, ssp (the wrap with the first stitch of the next pair) leaving a yo (wrap) as the first stitch on the left needle. wrap and turn
  • row 3: (rs) knit to the paired stitch made by the wrap of the previous row, knit the first stitch of the pair (the following two loops are wraps (yarn overs)), correct the mounts of the wraps and k3tog (the two wraps with the next stitch).  wrap and turn
  • row4: (ws) purl to the next wrap, sssp (slip 3 sts knitwise and purl through back loops).  wrap and turn
  • row 5: (rs) knit to the next wrap. k3 together. wrap and turn.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 until all stitches have been recovered.

I like to wrap the stitch on the final rows as well and then knit the wrap with the first and last instep stiches to help prevent holes.

Beginning with instep stitches, continue as follows; (place marker at beginning of round)

  1. rt, k15, rt, k6, rt, k3, rt, k6
  2. k2, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k3, yo, (slip 1, k2tog, psso), yo, k3, yo, (slip 1, k2tog, psso), yo, k2, k3, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k2, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k2, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k3
  3. as row 1
  4. k5, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k3, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k5, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo, k13, yo, (slip one, k2tog, psso), yo

Repeat these rows until desired length is reached (I did 12 repeats) and then begin (k1, p1) ribbing for 10 rounds.

Bind off very loosely.

    • rt means the same as it does in the Mirasol pattern; to knit two together without dropping stitches and then knit into first stitch again, drop stitches.
